What to know:
- Why did people start colonies in New England?
- How did the Puritans' religious beliefs affect life and government in the New England colonies?
- How did New England's economy depend on the regions natural resources?
Standards:
- CC.NYS.5.4.a. Europeans traveled to the Americas in search of new trade routes, including a northwest passage, and resources. They hoped to gain wealth, power, and glory.
- CC.NYS.5.4.b. Europeans encountered and interacted with Native Americans in a variety of ways.

- Today we will be starting a project that will encompass all of the next three chapter on the colonies. This project will be to make a pamphlet or tri-fold brochure about one of the three colonial regions, New England, Middle, or Southern.
- Students will get an information sheet and see an example of the project. Students will also be assigned their regions.

- Students will start reading section two in pair and will write down their answers to the reading check questions.
- The students should be reading in pair aloud and should be discussing chapter 4: section two reading check questions.
- We will also look at a map of New England so the students are aware of the different states that makeup New England.

- Students will watch the above video.
- Students will take turns reading headings on page 209 in their textbooks.
- Read the passages on page 210. Students can take turns reading these passages aloud to the class.
- Students will think, pair, share the following questions.
- Why did the barter system work so well in an early colonial town?
- How did the blacksmiths get food in the barter system?
- Students should write a summary for page 210.
- Then, after students have written their summaries, collectively as a class we will read page 211 in our social studies textbooks.
- After reading page 211 students will think, pair, share the following questions.
- Why do you think the Puritans traded some of their crops for English goods?
- Why do you think Puritans traded for sugar instead of growing sugarcane?
- Students will compare and contrast the Puritan community to our community now.
- On the Smartboard there will be one column for our lifestyle and one column for the Puritan lifestyle. Students will raise their hands with answers to our lifestyle and answers to the Puritan lifestyle. Then they will circle the similarities between the Puritan lifestyle and our lifestyle now.
Homework Due Wednesday, : Students will read pages 218-219 and answer the reading check on page 219. The reading check is: “What were the triangular trade routes?”.

- Read page 215 in our social studies textbooks, collectively as a class. Students will read different headings out loud and take turns reading the page.
- Students will answer the following questions in a think, pair, share manor.
- What did farmers do with their surplus goods?
- In what ways did New England’s location and physical setting make farming difficult?
- Students will then read page 216 in their textbooks. Students will take turns reading the passages out loud to the whole class.
- After reading page 216 in the textbooks. Students will think, pair, share the following questions.
- Why do you think ships made in New England were less costly than those made in Europe?
- In what ways did the colonists use the forests in New England?
- Students will breakup into partners and read page 217 in their textbooks. Students will answer the following questions after reading page 217. The partners will be assigned by me to breakup conflicting students.
- How would England gain by being New England’s only trading partner?
- Why did fishers dry the fish they exported?
- How did colonists light their houses?
- Why did fishing and whaling become important industries in colonial New England?
