For the next few weeks we will be reading, analyzing, annotating, discussing, and writing informative texts. Several skills are needed to be able to complete these tasks. Each skill will be broken down, modeled, practiced, and practiced again. Students will work as a whole class group, in pairs, and independently. Students will use multi-media sources as examples and guides.
Several New York State Next Generation English Language Arts Learning Standards are essential in order to be able to accomplish the informative writing assignments. These standards will be practiced while utilizing the selected poems, articles, videos, and photos in order to master these skills.

5W1c: Use precise language and content-specific vocabulary while writing an argument. 5W1d: Use appropriate transitional words, phrases, and clauses to clarify and connect ideas and concepts.

- Finish brainstorming at least five ideas on page 2.
- Finish reading pages 3 and 4 of your packet and answer the questions on page 5.
- Read page 1 of the opinion writing packet.
- Brainstorm at least five ideas on page 2 of how plastics and garbage affect the ocean and animals that live in it.
- Watch the video "Plastic Is Taking Over The Ocean".
- Finish brainstorming five ideas on page 2.
- Read pages 3 and 4 of your packet and answer the questions on page 5.

Writing Task:
- Students will write a persuasive, opinion based essay about how the United States should respond to the natural disasters of other nations and how we as fifth graders could and should respond.
Guiding Questions and Big Ideas:
- How should multinational aid organizations prioritize aid when they respond to neighboring communities struck by a natural disaster?
- How do speeches motivate and compel people to act?
- Multinational aid organizations are part of the global community and therefore have a responsibility to provide aid to foreign countries struck by a natural disaster.
- Public speakers motivate people to act by supporting their opinions with compelling reasons and sound evidence.
