- What you will learn: In this chapter, you will learn about the great empires of West Africa, which grew rich from trade.
- Section 1: Geography and Early Africa.
- The Big Idea: Geography, resources, culture, and trade influenced the growth of societies in West Africa.
- Section 2: Empire of Ghana.
- The Big Idea: The rulers of Ghana built an empire by controlling the salt and gold trade.
- Section 3: Later Empires.
- The Big Idea: Between 1000and 1500, three great kingdoms- Mali, Songhai, and Great Zimbabwe- developed in Africa.
- Section 4: Historical and Artistic Traditions.
- The Big Idea: Although the people of West Africa did not have a written language, their culture has been passed down through oral history, writings by other people, and the arts.

- Students will complete sections 1, 2, 3, and 4 of the "Early African Civilizations' packet.
- Students will write the starred words words from sections 1, 2, 3, and 4 of the "Early African Civilizations packet in sentences. This may be completed in their notebooks or on looseleaf.
- After completing the above tasks, students will look through the "Early African Civilizations" Chapter 13 in the textbook and make a list of 20 questions that can be asked about the chapter.
