GOALS:
- The goal is to read and write as much as you can each day.
- The goal is to be creative.
- The goal is to love what you are creating.
IMPORTANT QUESTIONS:
- What project are you working on today?
- Are you writing as much as you can each day?
- Are you reading as much as you can each day?
Suggestions:
- Enjoy this time with your family as much as possible.
- If your parents think it is appropriate, spend as much time as possible outside in your yard.
- Read your favorite novel or magazines as much as possible.
- Write.
- Create.
- Help cook. Help with the dishes. Help with chores.
- Think about all the things you are grateful for. Write in your Gratitude Notebook. Make a list of as many things- little things and significant things- that you are grateful for. Research shows that the more you recognize what you are grateful for, the more content, successful, and at peace you will be.
- When you are on your device, consider doing one of the above suggestions instead.
SUMMER EXTRA CREDIT
CREATIVE PROJECT IDEAS:
- Would you like to start off the school year in September with a 100 in both writing and social studies? Work on some writing projects over the summer and you will earn these points. But most importantly, your mind will be working, you will be creative, and your writing will improve.
- These project ideas will help you focus on different projects that you may work on over the summer.
- I highly recommend that you take the time to read through the document below. It might take about 15 minutes to read the suggestions, but it will be worth your while.
- I suggest that you spend a few days on each project. Make each project the best writing piece that you have created so far. Some students will spend a week on one project. Some might spend more. Just do your very best.
- The goal is to write as much as you can each day. The goal is to be creative. The goal is to love what you are doing.
- If you would like, feel free to email me with your ideas about the projects you are creating. What projects are you working on? Are you writing as much as you like each day?
- Please feel free to email me your completed projects, or take a photo of your work and text it to me (if that is easier for you).

EXTRA CREDIT GRATITUDE NOTEBOOK
Gratitude Notebook Directions:
EXTRA CREDIT GRATITUDE NOTEBOOK
- This is an ongoing assignment.
- It will be beneficial to fill out your Gratitude Notebook every day.
- Pick a quiet time to do this.
- This is one of the most important assignments from our class that you have during this time at home.
- I highly encourage you to fill out your Gratitude Notebook every day, including Saturday and Sunday. This is a habit that is proven to enhance many parts of your life, throughout your life.
Gratitude Notebook Directions:

Gratitude Notebook Ideas:
NAVY SEAL BREATHING EXERCISES:
How to Breathe like a Navy Seal
Step 1: Find a comfortable chair or place to lie down.
Step 2: Inhale for 4 seconds.
Step 3: Hold air in your lungs for 4 seconds.
Step 4: Exhale for 4 seconds, emptying all of the air in your lungs.
Step 5: Hold your lungs empty for 4 seconds.
Step 6: Repeat for five minutes, or as long as is necessary to feel refocused and relaxed.
- Do you have a journal or notebook at home? If you do have a journal or notebook, you might want to use that as your new Gratitude Notebook. Or, you can create your own Gratitude Notebook.
- If you do not have a journal or notebook at home, can you create one? Do you have computer paper, loose-leaf, or construction paper? What about a paper bag that you can cut into the shape that you wish? If you can, staple the pages together.
- You might enjoy decorating the cover of your Gratitude Notebook. If you have paper at home, decorate or draw a picture on the paper and glue the paper to the cover of your Gratitude Notebook. You can be creative and use paint and glitter. How about cutting out pictures from magazines and gluing them onto your cover?
- Be sure your name is on the cover. Be sure you give your notebook a title. Perhaps “Gratitude Notebook.” Maybe “I Give Thanks.” You decide on a title.
- Be sure to write the date on the top of each new gratitude list.
- Write as many ideas and concepts that you are grateful for. You may use bullets as we do in class, or you may write in complete sentences- whichever you prefer.
- Do you have a bell or chime of some sort? How about using a glass and tapping it lightly with a spoon? Try experimenting with putting different levels of water in the glass and see what different sounds it makes. Try to ring the bell or chime or glass before you start writing in your Gratitude Notebook. And ring it again when you are finished, just as we usually do in class.
- Definitely practice your breathing. Since you have plenty of time, see if you can take five deep breathes. And then the next day add an extra deep breath. How many deep breathes can you take during a sitting?
- Remember the reasons why we practice breathing? It helps us to be calm when we are feeling overwhelmed, and helps us to feel better when we already feel great. It is great for our mental and physical health. If it is good enough for the United States Navy, then it is good enough for me!
- I am hoping that we can find a time during the day when we are all working on our Gratitude Notebooks and practicing our breathing at the same time. I will look into this and get back to you. It will be beneficial for you to fill out your gratitude notebook each day during a time when you can be reflective.
- Research shows that the more you recognize what you are grateful for, the more successful, content, and at peace you will be.
- Here are some other GRATITUDE ideas:
- What about finding some smooth rocks and painting some words of things that you are grateful for on the rocks?
- Is there a way to write on leaves? Maybe there aren’t any leaves out there yet!
- Try drawing a collage of pictures of things that you are grateful for.
- Interview as many people as you can asking them what they are grateful for. Share your ideas with them.
- Create a collage of words of things you are grateful for.

SUMMER EXTRA CREDIT
READING IDEAS: What are you reading?
Reflect on the following questions:
You may reflect on these questions by discussing your answers with another student via Zoom, FaceTime, or Skype. You may discuss these questions with a parent or grandparent in your home or by phone call. You may also write your answers in bullets, sentences, or paragraphs. You may also reflect on these questions and respond by drawing, painting, taking photos, making a video, or creating something else that summarizes your reflections on something that you are reading. The important part is that you are reflecting and analyzing the different genres that you are reading.
It is very important that you are reading something that you enjoy as much as possible.
It is very important that you are writing as much as possible. You each have worked so hard on your writing this year. Writing is like any sport or dance or playing an instrument- the more you practice the better you will be. And if you don't practice, you lose much of the growth that you have worked so hard at gaining this past year.
Write as much as you can!

Reflection Questions:
- What are you reading this summer?
- How long have you been reading every day? Is anyone reading an hour every day? We have so much time on our hands right now so let's read more! I will commit to reading the novel that I am reading for at least a half hour every day. I will let you know if I can keep my goal every day.
- Do you ever read out loud with someone in your home? Do you take turns reading? My daughter is in college and we still read out loud our favorite books together. When I lived in Africa I read poetry and a favorite novel with my sister and my best friend.
- Do you prefer novels, graphic novels, magazine articles, poetry, cookbooks, sports books, informational texts? Why?
- What is the best part about your book so far?
- Who is your favorite character? Why?
